The first Bahari Yetu Festival was attended by over 150 kids, from more than 10 different schools on Lamu, as well as some kids from off the island too! We were so happy to have Amma Primary, Wiyoni Primary, Lamu Boys Secondary, Shela Primary, Kipungani School, Kijani School, Matondoni School, Ubunifu, Anidan and Teens for Change present amongst those schools.
There were lots of fun activities for the kids on the day, and leading up to the festival the kids were all encouraged to create a piece of Recycled Artwork from plastic collected off our beaches. We were blown away by the creativity and picking a winner was tough! We are thankful to all those who donated towards the great prizes that were given out and also to Lulu stories for sponsoring the art competition!

3rd Place: Mohamed Feswal, Matondoni Primary School
Ice-cream for 2 at Peponi Hotel
Most of these schools attendance was sponsored, which covered their transport to and from the festival as well as art supplies to be used on their artwork for the recycled art competition. Also all students were provided with a tasty Pilau lunch to keep them going. We would like to give a big thank you Peponi Hotel, Kijani Hotel, the Island Children’s Fund, Royal African Safari’s, WWF, Tusk Trust and the Leopard Foundation for sponsoring the schools.
To top it all off we so touch when the dhow captains of Stella II, Desire, Talan, Venus and Galaxy offered to take the kids on a sail across the channel. Such a special surprise and treat for the kids!
